Chapter 6— I Want To Be Nice
Henderson stared down at Lena waiting for her reply. Now he had entered the room. Lena didn't do anything bad to make her scared, but the rage in Henderson's eyes was enough to make her nervous.
"I was only correcting her, I overheard her yelling at you so....." She was forced to keep the rest of her explanation to herself when Henderson cut her off.
"Didn't I warn you? Get the hell out!" He barked pointing to the door.
"Itzel," Lena called touching Itzel who still crying. It was never her intention to make the girl cry.
"I said get the fuck out!" Henderson yelled this time louder. It made Lena flinch, she sprang to her feet and hurried out of the room.
Lena concluded she was going to get fired today as she walked to her room.
"Are you ok Mom?" Trent asked when he saw the look on his mom's face the moment she walked in.
"I'm fine," she forced a smile smoothing Trent's hair.
Trent's brows knitted and his eyes studied Lena, she knew he doubted her words.
"I'm fine, honey. I promise," she assured.
Shortly, a knock came on Lena's door. It was Madam Carmen, she informed Lena that Henderson had called for her in his room.
Lena told Madam Carmen that she was going to be there shortly before she left.
When Madam Carmen was gone, Lena instructed Trent to stay in the room before she headed to meet Henderson.
Her knuckles thumped against the door to Henderson's room, her heart beating hard in her chest. If he ended up firing her, where was she going to get the advance payment he gave her earlier? She had already sent part of the money to Irene.
"Come in," Henderson's voice came disrupting her thoughts.
She pushed the door opened and wobbled in. Henderson was seated on the couch, his laptop was placed on his lap and had his eyes glued to it.
He was shirtless. His body was like nothing she had ever seen before, huge pecs, large biceps, strong muscles chiselled, and bronze, like a Greek god.
"Did I call you here to drool over me?" Henderson frowned gazing at her. He had put the laptop on the table beside him when he turned to see Lena slobbering at him like he was some kind of candy. He found it amusing since she claimed she hated him so much, but he concluded the Henderson charm must have been too much for her to resist.
Lena gazed downwards immediately as she gave herself a mental scolding. Her cheeks glowed red with embarrassment, she didn't expect to find herself staring at himself like a college girl drooling over a football captain. Lena blamed it on him for not wearing a shirt but also admitted that it was his room and he could do whatever he wanted.
"I gave you two simple rules Lena. Do not interfere in my personal affairs, don't scold or hit my daughter and you broke both just within a day of hiring you," Henderson scowled.
"Sir, I didn't hit Itzel. I would never do that," Lena defended tilting her head up to peer at him.
"You are fired!" Henderson stated.
Colour drained out of Lena's face and her mouth was wide open. She expected this but it hit hard nevertheless.
She regretted speaking up, she should just have kept shut or better still apologised and not tried to defend herself.
"Please Sir, don't fire my Mommy. We have nowhere to go, my Grandma kicked us out." Trent's voice echoed in the room.
Lena was surprised when she veered around and saw Trent standing by the door. She didn't think he was going to come here and tell Henderson that her mom had kicked them out since she instructed him not to leave the room. To her, Henderson was not going to change his mind because her mother kicked them out.
"This would be the last time I forgive you if you go against my rules," Henderson let out.
Wrinkles formed across Lena's forehead, "Does this mean that I get to keep my job?" There were traces of happiness in her voice.
"Yes, as long as you keep your mouth and nose out of my affairs," Henderson said in a chiding tone.
Henderson was only doing this because of Trent, he didn't want the kid to be homeless. He cared less about Lena, it didn't concern him if she was homeless. He believed Lena must have been so violent and made her mom's life miserable that she had no choice but to kick them out.
Lena's face lit up with a smile
"Thank you so much, Sir," Lena mumbled clasping her hand.
Henderson just glanced at her, he didn't respond to her, but Lena was too happy to notice. All that mattered was she still had her job.
"Thank you, Sir." Trent appreciated bowing slightly. He was happy seeing his mom smile unlike earlier when he had walked in.
A small smile played on Henderson's lips, "You are welcome, Trent."
He was pleased with the boy and admired how mannered he was. Henderson could see how much Trent loved his mom, but he wondered if the boy lived a miserable life getting scolded by Lena all the time.
"Why did you leave the room?" Lena asked Trent softly when they were back in their room.
"I'm sorry Mom for disobeying you, but I was worried about you," Trent's eyes moistened as he looked into his mom's green ones.
"You are forgiven," Lena smiled embracing him. She wasn't mad at Trent. Why would she be? She still had a job only because of him.
"Thank you for saving my job," Lena kissed Trent's cheeks and he giggled.
She didn't like the fact that Trent told Henderson about her mom kicking them out but giving it a thought she assumed he changed his mind because of that.
"Mr Henderson deserves the thank you. He is a good man," Trent smiled.
Lena only nodded, she didn't see Henderson as a good person even for a second, but there was no way she was going to tell her son that. She was the one who taught him to be appreciative and say nice things about people, she couldn't go against her teachings.
Next Day.....
"It's time to wake up Itzel," Lena said in a sing song as she sat beside Itzel who was pretending to be asleep.
Itzel had woken up earlier but she didn't want to get out of bed, talk to anyone, or even go to school today.
Itzel closed her eyes even tighter. She wanted to give Lena the impression that she was still asleep, but Lena had caught her already, she saw Itzel's eyelids move.
"Come on Itzel. Get up else you are going to be late for school," Lena smiled tapping her on the shoulder lightly.
"Ahh!" Itzel groaned sitting up. She pouted stretching her hands before she turned to face Lena.
"Hope you had a good sleep?" Lena asked smiling.
Itzel's eyes crinkled as she gazed at Lena.
"Aren't you upset with me? My Daddy scolded you because of me. You are going to stop being my Nanny right?" Itzel mumbled sadly.
Yesterday Itzel was sad when Henderson scolded Lena. She tiptoed out of her room and heard the conversation between her dad and Lena. She thought Lena was going to be upset with her, and probably quit since that was what all her previous Nannies had done.
Lena cupped Itzel's cheek seeing the sadness in her eyes.
"I'm not upset with you. And I'm not going to stop being your Nanny, I'll be here for as long as I can," Lena smiled.
"But why? I'm a bad child," Itzel muttered shocking Lena.
Lena couldn't help but wonder who was feeding the little girl with the talks that made her call herself bad.
"Who said you are a bad child?" Lena's brows furrowed.
Tears prickled at the corner of Itzel's eyes and she sniffed, "My former Nannies, they said no one was ever going to be my Nanny for long because I am a bad child who does bad things."
Lena draped her hands around Itzel embracing her. She felt sorry for Itzel, her daddy had given rules that his daughter shouldn't be scolded or hit but it wasn't enough to protect his daughter from emotional abuse. She could think about other insults the former Nannies must have dished out to Itzel that she was yet to talk about.
Lena placed both her hands on Itzel's shoulders when they disengaged the hug.
"You are not a bad child, sweetie. You might do wrong things sometimes but it doesn't make you bad. Even adults do wrong deeds but it doesn't make us bad. We should always be ready to make right our wrong, that is what matters. I believe you are a sweet angel, trust me being nice and friendly is fun." Lena's lips curved in a smile.
Itzel nodded and then held Lena's hands, "You are a nice lady and I want to be nice as well. Will you teach me? I promise to do my best to be friendly and nice."
Lena grinned, her heart fluttering with joy, she never expect Itzel's change to come this easy.
"Of course, I'll be glad to teach you but first, you have to apologise to your Dad for yesterday," Lena let out.
....
"Good morning, Daddy." Itzel greeted when she walked into Henderson's room.
When Henderson veered around to face Itze,l he was surprised to see the smile on her face, after what happened last night. The Itzel he knew was not going to speak with him until he had given her what she wanted.
He tried to get the headphones yesterday but it couldn't be delivered until today. It had been delivered to the mansion a few hours ago.
"Morning sunshine," Henderson smiled crouching in front of her and then he kissed her cheeks.
"Have you had your bath?" He asked when he stood up.
Itzel shook her head, she wanted to come to apologise to him before yelling her bath. Lena was waiting for her in the room.
"Daddy, I'm sorry about the things that I said yesterday. It doesn't matter if you don't get me the headphones because I know you love me," Itzel smiled.
Henderson's jaw dropped and his brows curved as he peered at Itzel, those words were definitely not his daughter's!
