Chapter 9—Letting Go Of Sentiments
Lena was back in her room and pacing around her heart beating hard in her chest and regrets surging through her veins. Even though she felt insulted by Henderson's words she didn't judge it right to have slapped him but her anger had taken the best of her. At this point she didn't need anyone to tell her that she was going to get fired, what was the need to be told when she had just slapped her boss? She ruined everything, only now did she really consider the things Irene had warned her about. If only she had adhered to her sister's warning then this would never have happened. Maybe she was just too intrusive, she cared about what he did with his life too much that she forgot what she was here for, to be Itzel's Nanny and not Henderson's Counsellor.
"I should just pack up my things and get ready to leave, he is going to fire me," she mumbled to herself. She grabbed her suitcase and scrambled to the wardrobe, she took her clothes and started to fold them and then put them in the suitcase. Maybe it was the worry that filled her mind that made her just put some of the clothes into the suitcase without even folding them.
"Argggh," she groaned into her palms just then a knock came on the door.
"Come in," she mumbled turning in the direction of the door.
Her eyes widened when the door creaked open and Henderson walked in. Lena's heart thumped rapidly in her heart like it had lost control, her breath got stuck in her throat. The expression on Henderson's face was one she was unable to interpret, Lena gaped downwards avoiding his piercing gaze.
Lena went back to putting the clothes into the suitcase.
"What are you doing?" Henderson asked but got no reply from Lena who acted like she didn't just hear him speak. This woman did a great job at amusing him, he didn't realise when a small smile formed on his lips as he stared at the woman who dared to slap him twice, first at the bar and now in his mansion.
"Lena, I'm sorry," Henderson apologised.
"Huh," Lena veered swiftly to face him. She wondered if her ears were messing with her.
"I'm packing to leave, you don't have to say the words. I know I'm fired already," Lena rushed her words.
A sigh left Henderson's lips," I said I'm sorry, you don't have to leave. I should never have said those words to you, I will be honest with you Lena even though we are not fond of each other I've always admired your parenting style and how you make motherhood look easy, it was one of the reasons why I hired you. And you were right, I'm not that great of a father. Henceforth I'll try my best to make sure that I disengage from any act that will affect the kids negatively."
Lena batted her lashes, several thoughts flooded her mind what if this man was trying to make a jest of her? She couldn't believe that he was apologising to her knowing the kind of man he was, wasn't he mad that she had slapped him.
Henderson saw how stunned she looked and he couldn't blame her for doubting his words, he hadn't given her a reason to think of him as a person who would be willing to render an apology to her.
"I know you might think I'm trying to fool you but I'm not, I'm sincerely sorry for my words. I had no right to call you names or question your motherhood. Trust me I got Trent those games with no bad intentions, I just wanted to gift him something and I felt glad seeing him smile when I handed the package to him. I would be glad if you consider letting him keep the toys, the kid is already doing so great at school, a little gift won't hurt but it's your decision."
By the time Henderson was finished with his statement, he was amazed, he had been struggling thinking about how he was going to apologize to Lena, the words he was going to say.
For the first time, Lena saw sincerity that she had never seen before in Henderson's eyes, his words sounded convincing making her feel that he meant what he said but she still had some doubts.
"I slapped..."
"I know you slapped me, even though it hurt but you did slap some sense into me, moreover I deserved it." Henderson chipped in calmly.
"I am sorry for slapping you, I shouldn't have. I'm sorry for calling you a bad father, you might have flaws but anyone can see the unmeasured love you have for Itzel. I'm not perfect myself. I hope that you forgive me for that." This time Lena maintained eye contact with Henderson as she uttered those words to him.
"It's fine. I think it will be best if we let go of our sentiments toward each other and give ourselves a chance. I think we both have judged each other so wrongly based on our first encounter."
"Daddy," Itzel called as she sauntered into the room with Trent trailing behind her.
Itzel had a slight frown on her face as her gaze darted from her dad to Lena.
"Is there a problem Daddy? We have been waiting for you, we are running late for school."
"Sorry Zel, I just got caught up with something. We should go now." Henderson smiled facing Itzel and then Trent.
"Bye Aunt Lena, bye Mommy," Itzel and Trent said simultaneously as they left the room with Henderson.
"Bye, have a great day," she smiled waving at the kids.
Lena plopped on the bed when they were gone, she was still in disbelief of all that has just happened. But one thing was sure, she had to let go of her sentiments towards Henderson. Maybe it was time to give him the benefit of the doubt about the kind of man she perceived him to be.
