Chapter 46—Heartbreak Is Heartbreaking!
Cleo told Lena that she caught her husband cheating on her with his mistress right on their matrimonial bed and it turned out that all the business trips he always told her he had gone on were lies. It was just his perfect excuse to go be with his mistress. Lena was disheartened, her heart was pricked for Cleo's situation. Cleo loved her husband dearly, she never failed to talk about how much she loved her husband Henry and how he was the perfect partner, her soulmate.
"Maybe he is cheating because I'm yet to get pregnant. Our second wedding anniversary would be in two weeks and I was trying to come up with a grand plan to celebrate it, " Cleo sobbed as she tilted her head to gaze at Lena.
"It's not your fault, Cleo. Don't blame it on yourself or give excuses for his actions."
Lena draped her arms around Cleo in a comforting embrace. Cleo had been crying non-stop regardless of whatever words of comfort Lena said to her.
"Maybe I should have let him explain why he did that, I just packed up my stuff and left the house. We just moved into the new house today, I had gone out to get us some groceries for the house only to return and see him with that woman, " Cleo cried. The hurt in her eyes was very evident, her heart ached so much. It felt as though her heart had been crushed by a boulder. Her chest clenched, her head was messed up it felt as if her head was being beaten for melodies.
Lena pulled away from the hug, her hands held Cleo's shoulders.
"None of this is your fault, Cleo, " Lena affirmed shaking her head.
"Yes, Lena is right. There is no justifiable reason for your husband to cheat on you. If he cheated it means he wanted to, he had the choice to say no but he didn't." Matteo spoke for the first time since Cleo walked in. Even though he was meeting Cleo for the first time he felt pity for her, he was well aware of how much pain a heartbreak could cause a person.
He was once in that situation two years ago, it felt so bad that he thought about taking his life but thanks to Lena he was able to heal and pick up the broken pieces of his heart and move on with his life.
Cleo's whimpering was no longer heard, she lifted her head and peered at Matteo.
"What do you think would make a man want to cheat? Did I do something wrong? Am I not good enough for him? I've always done my best to please Henry in every way that I can even if it meant making sacrifices just so he could be happy. What if I had done more? Maybe this would never have happened."
A sigh left Matteo's lips and a sad smile took over his face.
"That's not true. He cheated because he wanted to cheat, a partner who has the intent to cheat will still do it regardless of how amazing or sacrificing their partner is, it is the bitter truth."
Cleo peered at Matteo giving his words a thought. Matteo looked away, he rubbed his palm together and pressed his trembling lips together. Talking about a cheating partner made him think about his break-up with his ex-girlfriend Chaney. Even though it had been two years since it happened, the hurt was still there. Chaney was her name, the beautiful, amazing girl he fell in love with. Well, he thought she was that amazing until she unleashed her true colours.
A few months after Matteo and Chaney started dating she moved in with him. Things were going smoothly and they were having the best time of their lives and he thought that she was his soulmate, the perfect person for him to spend the rest of his life with.
He decide to propose to Chaney, he told Lena about it and she was delighted about it. Lena loved Chaney a lot even though Chaney pretended to like Lena in front of Matteo and hurl insults at her when Matteo wasn't there because she felt insecure about Matteo and Lena's friendship.
The day Matteo was to propose he came back home only to find Chaney in bed with a guy she introduced to him a few days back as his cousin, turns out she lied to him. The guy was her boyfriend and she was with Matteo not because she loved him but because she wanted to leech off him.
He was heartbroken, he called the relationship off and asked Chaney to leave his house with the guy. She tried to feign remorse but when she saw that Matteo wasn't having it, she told him she had always hated Lena and tried to blame the whole thing on Lena even though Lena had nothing to do with it.
"Matteo, are you ok?" Lena inquired seeing the look on his face. Sadness had taken over his features.
Matteo forced a smile and stood up to his feet.
"I'm good. I have to go now."
"Why? But..." Lena started to say sensing that something was wrong with Matteo and he didn't want to talk about it.
"You don't have to worry about me, you aren't even feeling well. All you have to do is rest." Matteo smiled.
"You are not well Lena? Why didn't you tell me? I've been venting about my problems. I feel so selfish, " Cleo facepalmed.
"Come on, you are not selfish. Also, I'm a lot better now so you don't have to worry about me. It should be the other way round."
Cleo smiled and then threw her hands around Lena by the time she was done saying those words.
"Thank you for letting me vent, for listening to me."
"I better get going now, " Matteo muttered making Lena and Cleo pull away from each other bringing an end to the hug.
"Say hello to Trent for me when he returns from school."
"I will, take care of yourself." A smile crossed Lena's face.
"I'm sorry Matteo, I've been caught up with my emotions that I didn't even introduce myself," Cleo muttered.
"It's fine, heartbreak is heartbreaking. I know there is nothing that I would say which is capable of erasing your pain but I just want you to know that even though heartbreak hurts what hurts even more is losing yourself because of it, because that same person who is the cause of that pain is going to move on like nothing ever happened."
Cleo stared at Matteo directly, her lips were pressed together.
She gave a tight nod, "Thank you, Matteo."
Matteo bobbed his head in response with a small smile.
"Matteo's words made me feel like he has experienced heartbreak before. His advice didn't just sound like that of those be positive kind of people or it is going to be okay type. It felt as though he was saying it from a place of experience, " Cleo said after Matteo was gone.
Lena nodded, "He has been heartbroken."
"Chaney is a wicked soul, now that think of it she might be a good match for that jerk of a husband Henry, " Cleo scowled dramatically making Lena chuckle. Lena told her about Chaney and how heartbroken Matteo was after he caught her cheating.
"I'm glad you are in a better mood now considering the state you were in when you walked in, I thought you would not stop crying. I didn't even know what to say to you to make you calm. I see why you spend so much time talking to him on the phone and why you say amazing things about him, it pains me though because it makes me feel like Henderson doesn't stand a chance and I'm rooting for Derlena." Cleo pouted faking tears.
Lena smiled, she wondered if it was a good time to tell Cleo that she was in a relationship with Henderson or if she had to do it when Henderson was back. Also, she was worried, Cleo's marriage just hit the rocks so it wasn't the best time to let her know about hers and Henderson's relationship, it was going to be insensitive.
Cleo puffed a breath and sprang up to her feet.
"Can I use your restroom? I don't want to wet myself. I never knew crying so much could make a person feel like emptying their bladder this quickly."
Lena let out a small laugh because of the expression on Cleo's face and the tone of her voice.
"Sure, go on."
A knock came on Lena's door and she could tell who it was.
"Come in."
The door creaked open, and Itzel and Trent ran in leaving Henderson at the door. They hugged Lena tightly, she laughing seeing how bubbly and excited they were.
"Ah, " she groaned when her head started to ache.
"Baby, are you okay?" Henderson rushed to her crouching in front of her.
"Did I just hear you call Lena baby?" Cleo's eyes widened in surprise. She was standing in front of the bathroom door and her questioning gaze dorked Lena and Henderson who were exchanging glances.
Trent and Itzel looked at each other before letting their gazes on Lena and Henderson who looked dumbstruck.
"Mommy, why did Uncle Henderson just call you baby?" Trent mouthed voicing out his thoughts.
