Chapter 74— It Was All A Lie?
Lena, Itzel, Trent and Henderson went to Irene's graduation ceremony, and she was delighted to see them. Irene graduated with a first class in business administration and Lena was super proud of her. Lena's mom was also there but she barely said a word to Lena and Trent instead she avoided them like a plague.
Just like Irene said, Henderson's presence made her the star, a lot of people wanted to take pictures with him. The ceremony was over and they were on their way home. Henderson and Lena offered Lena's mom a ride home since they were going to drop off Irene first before going to the mansion but she turned them down saying she didn't need any favours or assistance from them.
"Aunt Irene, I've missed you a lot." Trent giggled hugging her.
"Dude, I've missed you so much." Irene smiled kissing his hair.
"Itzel, I love your hair. It's beautiful, " Irene complimented with a warm smile as she turned to her.
"Thank you. Mommy styled it for me," Itzel muttered.
"Lena is the best no arguments. I'm just really happy that I'm done with school." Irene giggled with excitement.
"Irene when you are settled and ready to get a job, you can send your CV to me and tell me what kind your job you'll like, the kind of pay you want. There's a vacancy for the position of a project manager in the Gomez group of companies, If you would like for that position I'll call up Brian and set up an interview for you.
"You don't have to do any of that darling, you've told her about the job opportunity if she's interested, she can apply herself." Lena chipped in calmly.
"Baby, but I'm not..."
"It's fine, Henderson. I understand what my sister is saying. I feel that way, people should get things based on their connections but how worthy and deserving they are of them." Irene interjected stopping Henderson from completing his statement.
Henderson sighed, "As you say."
Henderson dropped Irene off at her mom's place. Her mom was yet to return home, Irene invited them in but they turned her down. Irene understood Lena's reasons, she had been a witness on several occasions about how their mom always treated Lena with so much cruelty and contempt like she was an outsider.
A Day Later....
"Where are you all dressed up to go to?" Mrs Cohen lifted a brow peering at Irene who just emerged from the stairs. She was wearing a black dress and a white pair of sandals, and her hand was packed in a ponytail.
Irene's lips curved in a smile, " I'm going to visit Lena. Her engagement is fast approaching and we have a lot of preparations to do. Do you want to come along? I can wait for you."
Mrs Cohen burst out laughing, she clapped her hands before shooting Irene a glare.
"You say the worst jokes. Why would I want to go with you to see Lena? I've told you a lot of times even though you just got back home yesterday, I'm going to repeat myself. Stop filling my ears with noise about Lena's engagement party. She's not the first in the world to throw an engagement party so what's all of this about?"
Irene's face contorted in a frown, she sauntered to the couch her mom was seated on and sat on it.
"Mom, don't you think it's time you bring an end to this? It's been years, Dad wouldn't want this. Lena has done nothing wrong to you."
Her mother huffed wrigging her head in disbelief, "Lena has done nothing wrong? You've been blinded by the love you have for her. Your sister is bad news, it's best if you stay away from her. I don't want your life to be ruined just the way she ruined hers by having a bastard son."
Irene sprang up to her feet, She nibbled on her lower lips trying to stop herself from saying horrible things to her mom that she was going to end up regretting, but whenever her mom started to say such things about Lena it always hurt her.
"Mom, you think Lena's life is ruined simply because she gave birth to Trent. That boy is a blessing to this family, he is smart, mannered and well-behaved. Lena did a great job raising Trent. Lena is living her best life without you in it and that's because you are not willing to admit your mistakes and right your wrongs. Lena still loves you and I know you love her...."
Mrs. Cohen's lips drew back in a snarl as she interrupted Irene cutting her off, " I don't love her. It's good she is away from me, I just hope she doesn't kill the young man who made the worst mistake of his life the moment he fell in love with Lena. I just...."
"Mom, bye see you when I get back." Irene chipped in waving at her mom. She scooted to the door, pulled it open and stormed out before her mom could say anything else.
A smile grew on Lena's face when she pulled the door open and saw Irene. She pulled her into a hug. She stepped aside for Irene to come in after they disengaged the hug.
"You told me you were going to come since noon and it's already two o'clock. I've been waiting for you."
"I'm sorry, I was getting ready. After I was done, Mom started her talks and I had to run out so I wouldn't have to listen to the rest of them, " Irene groaned taking her seat.
Lena chuckled, "Are you sure you aren't just blaming it on Mom? I know you take a lot of time to get ready, I'm pretty sure you spent over thirty minutes just to style your hair."
Irene feigned to be hurt by Lena's words, she had a hand on her chest and a pained look marred her countenance.
"That's not true, Moreover my hair is styled in just a ponytail and I didn't even do my makeup because I was in a haste to come."
"This house is really beautiful, I mean I've never been to a mansion as beautiful as this." Irene giggled looking around.
"Trying to change the topic I see, What would you like to have?" Lena inquired standing up.
"A bottle of wine will be fine. Where are the kids and Henderson?" Irene asked.
"They went out to get ice cream not too long before you came."
"I'll go get you your wine, I'll be right back, " Lena mouthed before ambling away. She returned to the living room shortly with a bottle of wine and a glass. She placed it on the table in front of Irene before settling on the couch.
"There is something I have to tell you." Irene mouthed clearing her throat. She looked like someone who was about to confess to a crime. She avoided eye contact with Lena, Lena knew the only time Irene would act that way was when she had done something wrong.
"What is it?" Lena stared at her with raised brows.
"That time I told you that I needed money to pay for my accommodation and tuition, I lied to you. Me and Matteo came up with the plan so that you would take the job, we didn't want you to miss such a huge opportunity. Everything I told you was a lie," Irene let out.
Lena let out a laugh, "What do you mean by it was all a lie? You are joking right?"
"No, " Irene shook her head gazing downwards.
Lena stopped laughing after hearing Irene's response, and her face hardened. From the look on Irene's face, Lena knew she was damn serious.
