Chapter 7— What's His Motive?
"Daddy," Itzel called softly tapping Henderson's hand when he didn't respond to her apology. He just stared at her like he had seen an alien.
Henderson was in disbelief that his daughter just apologised to him and said it didn't matter if he gave her the headphones or not. He didn't raise his daughter to apologise or say sorry, he didn't think it was necessary. Why would his daughter Itzel Asanel Henderson Bain apologise to anyone? Never had he thought his upbringing was wrong but today he felt that way hearing an apology from his daughter.
"Yes, sunshine. You don't have to apologise. I should have kept my promise," Henderson smiled as he finally found his voice.
Itzel shook her head, "I should apologise, Daddy. What I did was wrong. Will you forgive me?
Henderson nodded, "Yes. And I got you the headphones."
He marched to the drawer, after grabbing the box which contained the headphones he walked back to Itzel who was all smiles.
"Thank you, Daddy. I love you," Itzel giggled embracing her father who was still trying to process things.
"You are welcome. I love you more sunshine," he smiled kissing her cheeks.
When Itzel went back to her room Lena could tell she was delighted from the look on her face. Itzel showed her the new gift and told her all that had transpired between her and her dad, his reaction when she apologised to him. Lena surmised that he must have been taken by surprise hearing an apology from Itzel, she just hoped he wasn't going to scold her for it.
A week Later.....
Henderson noticed a great change in Itzel's attitude, even the workers in the house did. They were equally shocked and wondered how the little girl changed unexpectedly. Itzel was no longer impolite to the workers, speaking to her dad rudely or getting into fights at school. For the first time in months, Henderson hadn't gotten any reports about his daughter from school rather he received a call telling him that whatever it was he was doing that made Itzel change he should keep doing it.
Lena was enjoying her work more than she thought she would. Maybe it was because she and Henderson barely spoke, the few times they talked was when she greeted him or when he asked questions concerning Itzel.
Despite the fact that Henderson was no longer throwing jabs at her, something about him bothered her, he would bring ladies into the house at night and they would disturb the peace of the place with moans and annoying screams from the ladies. She was glad that during all of this none of the kids had woken up, but most times Henderson and his sex partners' screams would wake her up. She was confused as to why a father would be that reckless, he could choose to take his numerous girlfriends elsewhere but he chooses to bring them to the mansion.
She wondered if he was like that all along or if if it was a new attitude he developed but she dared not to talk to him about it. After all, he had warned her to stay out of his personal affairs.
Other than that things were going great except that Itzel and Trent weren't getting along like Lena thought they would. For some reason Itzel didn't like speaking to Trent. He noticed it and spoke to Lena about it but she said he should give Itzel time.
"Have a sit Lena before you and Itzel go," Henderson mumbled when Lena was done talking to Itzel.
Henderson and Itzel were in the living room watching Itzel's favourite cartoon when Lena came to call Itzel so she could have her night bath.
"Ok, sir." Lena nodded taking a sit as she wondered what it was Henderson wanted to talk about.
"I've been thinking about Trent. He is old enough to be in school, don't you think?" Henderson muttered glancing at Lena before he continued.
"He is a smart kid and is supposed to be in school. So I've decided to enrol him in Itzel's school."
"My school!" Itzel gaped at her dad with furrowed brows making him turn to her.
"Yes, sunshine. Is there a problem with that?" He arched his brows surprised at her interjection. He thought she was going to be happy about the news but her reaction was the opposite.
Itzel chuckled nervously when she saw Lena looking in her direction.
"Of course, I'm happy Daddy," she forced a smile.
There was no way she was going to tell her father that she didn't like his decision in front of Lena who was Trent's mother.
"Good girl," Henderson smiled smoothing her hair and she faked a grin.
"You can come along with mee and Itzel tomorrow so we can get him registered," he told Lena but got no response from her, she was lost in thoughts.
"Lena," Henderson called jolting her out of her thoughts.
"Yes," Lena's eyes darted around and she sat up.
Henderson stared at her wondering what she was thinking about that made her so absent-minded he was going to ask her about it but he kicked against the Idea, he didn't want to give her the impression that he cared about her.
"Sir, I'm glad about the offer but I cannot accept the offer. The school fees is almost thrice my salary, I'm already in search of a less expensive school for Trent."
"Who said you will be paying for it?" Henderson arched his brows peering at Lena.
"Sir...." Lena's eyes narrowed in confusion.
"You don't have to worry about the fees, I'll be paying for it." Henderson cut her off before she could finish.
Lena's eyes widened and her brows knitted in surprise. The same man she hated was offering to pay her son's school fees. She couldn't understand why Henderson was doing that. He had made it clear on several occasions that he didn't care about her, why then was he willing to spend such a huge amount on her son? She was unable to stop herself from thinking if he had an agenda in mind. If he had a hidden motive for doing all of this.
A small smile played on Henderson's lips as he watched Lena's expression.
"Don't get it wrong Lena, I want nothing from you. I just care about Trent that's all. I'm sure your son will be happy if you accept the offer," he stated as if he read her thoughts.
"Huh," Lena batted her lashes, did her expression make her thoughts that obvious? She couldn't help but wonder if Henderson could read thoughts apart from being a jerk.
"I wasn't thinking that sir," Lena laughed nervously.
Henderson nodded with a nonchalant expression plastered on his face. He didn't believe her but he wasn't ready to drag that but his expression did.
"I see. So what's your decision?" He asked fixing his eyes on Lena whose gaze was downturned.
She lifted her head to meet his gaze when she had made up her mind on what her answer was going to be.
"Yes. Thank you so much, sir." she appreciated clasping her hands together.
As usual, Henderson didn't respond to her appreciation he just got up after speaking to Itzel and headed upstairs.
