Chapter 81— Who Are You, Woman?
"Mommy, where are you going?"
"Are you crying, Mommy?"
Trent and Itzel threw questions at Lena simultaneously as they took steps closer to her.
She tried to stop herself from breaking down but she couldn't, the tears streamed down her cheeks and she had no control over them. How was she going to tell the kids that the call she received was from Vix hospital and she was told that Henderson got into an accident and was taken there?
Henderson had gone out a few hours earlier saying he wanted to get a gift for her, little did she know that he was going to meet with an accident. If she knew that was going to happen then she would have insisted he stay back at the mansion and not go out.
"Mommy, are you okay?" Worry crept down Itzel's face, she scooted to Lena and held her hand. Trent did the same coming to stand beside Lena.
"Sweeties, don't worry. Mommy is just stressed, " Irene smiled crouching in front of Itzel and Trent whose eyes moistened with tears as they peered at Lena.
From the look on Trent's and Itzel's faces, Irene knew they didn't believe her and their actions confirmed it.
Their gazes shifted back to Lena who had wiped the tears on her face now, she forced a smile but it wasn't enough to convince Trent and Itzel who exchanged glances with each other.
"Mommy, should we call Daddy?" Itzel mumbled.
Lena looked away from the kids as tears started to roll down her cheeks again when Itzel and Trent talked about calling Henderson. Her heart clenched in her chest. She took a sharp breath and wiped the tears on her face with the back of her palms before turning to face them.
"Itzel, Trent are you both done with your homework?" Cleo questioned making them turn to her.
"Aunt Cleo, we will do that later. We just want to know why mommy is crying." Trent's voice was heavy with concern.
Itzel nodded in support, "Yes. Mommy doesn't look okay."
Lena tried to widen her smile, she cupped Itzel's and Trent's faces.
"I'm fine. I just have to go somewhere at the moment but I'll be right back. " she bent forward and planted kisses on their cheeks.
"Cleo, go with Lena. I'll stay back and look after the kids." Irene muttered.
"Ok, " Cleo bobbed her head.
"We'll be back before you know it, " Cleo smiled embracing Itzel and Trent before he and Lena walked out of the room.
AT THE HOSPITAL....
"Lena." Greg waved rising to his feet, he took steps to where Cleo and Lena were with Kyra trailing behind him.
Surprise crossed Lena's face, " You both are here?"
"Yeah, we brought Henderson here. We happened to be on the scene and we recognised him so.."
Lena hugged Greg before he could finish saying the remaining words.
"Thank you. Where is he?"
"How come you two were at the accident scene?" Cleo stared at them with crinkled eyes.
"Leave that for later, " Lena stated nudging her.
BACK AT THE MANSION......
"It's been an hour since Mommy and Aunt Cleo left and they are not back. Don't you think something is wrong? " Itzel face was gloomy.
"Yes, Daddy hasn't returned as well. I'm really worried, " An exasperated sigh left Trent's lips.
"Aunt Irene please call them..." Trent and Itzel said in unison veering in her direction.
"OK, I'll go grab my phone from the living room. You two just wait here." Irene smiled scrambling out of the bed and she scooted out of the room afterwards.
Irene sighed as she plopped on the couch in the living room, she lied to Itzel and Trent her phone was in her bag but she didn't want to call up Lena, she knew exactly what was happening and she didn't want the kids to know about it at least not yet. She had to wait to hear from Lena and Cleo before knowing what to do next.
The doorbell rang jolting Irene out of her thoughts.
"Hold on, I'm coming, " She exhaled got off the couch and headed to the door but the doorbell rang once again.
"I'm coming, " she answered this time louder.
She groaned in frustration when the doorbell rang once again. She wondered how a person could be so impatient, why not just ring the doorbell and wait for a while before ringing it again?
"You!" Irene's upper lip raised slightly in scorn as she pulled the door open and saw Brian standing there.
His lips curved in a smile ignoring the contemptuous look on Irene's face.
"You look beautiful, " Brian complimented still smiling.
"I don't need your compliments. You can come in if you want to, " Irene glared at Brian then she walked away from the door.
"Don't you think it's time we become friends? I'm tired of this bad blood between us." Brian sighed as he sauntered into the living room.
Irene cackled folding her arms across her chest, " Well Mr. Money. That's not the same for me, I can go on for as long as possible. I really don't care."
"Irene, can you please stop calling me that?" Brian sighed.
"Nope, I won't." Irene simpered.
"By the way, why are you here?" Irene arched a brow at him.
"I came to pay you guys a visit. Where are the rest?"
Irene heaved a breath, " Henderson got into an accident. Lena was told on the phone so she went over there with Cleo."
Brian's jaw slacked, and worry overtook his face.
"What!"
A sigh left Irene's mouth the moment her gaze shifted from Brian and she saw Trent and Itzel who had just emerged from the stairs.
"What happened to Daddy?" Trent and Itzel gasped scooting closer to her.
"I told you guys to stay in the room."
"Your phone was ringing so we brought it." Itzel stretched the phone to her.
Irene gazed downward after taking the phone from Trent, her lie was exposed and now the kids knew about everything!
DAYS LATER...
These past days felt like gloomy ages for the entire household and friends of Henderson. He was still lying on the hospital bed yet to regain consciousness. He sustained a lot of injuries from the accident that he had to be operated on. The operation was successful but he had to be moved to the intensive care unit. Lena spent every night at the hospital with hopes of Henderson opening his eyes and yesterday she felt a ray of hope when she felt Henderson's hand move as she held it but he didn't open his eyes.
"Lena, you should go home take a bath and get some rest," Brian muttered as she turned to Lena.
Lena shook her head, her lips pressed together. There was no way she was going to leave Henderson's side, she had hopes that he was going to wake up soon.
" I can't leave him. I'll be here until he wakes up."
Brian sighed, he felt pity for Lena. Lena was a wreck, her eyes were swollen as a result of lack of sleep and constant crying. Convincing Lena to go home and take a bath or rest always proved to be a huge task every single day since Henderson was in the hospital.
"You have to go, Lennie. We'll be here with Henderson until you return." Matteo smiled placing a hand on her shoulder.
"Matteo is right, Sis. It's fine if you don't want to rest at home, but you should go take a bath. It's past noon already." Irene added.
After a lot of convincing Lena agreed to go to the mansion. The kids were happy to see her and enveloped her in a warm embrace. She kissed them and told them a story assuring them afterwards that their Daddy was going to be fine. They asked her if they could go with her to the hospital to see Henderson and she said yes. Cleo made sure that after Lena took a bath she had something to eat before they headed to the car to set out for the hospital. Just as they hit the road, Lena's phone rang. It was Brian who was calling.
Lena picked up the call.
"Hello, Brian."
"Lena, Henderson has opened his eyes."
"Oh my!" Lena screamed joyfully. She didn't even realise that she had hung up the call in the process. Her face brightened as she turned to face Cleo, Itzel and Trent.
"He is awake!" Lena embraced them.
Lena didn't need to say who but they knew she was talking about Henderson, their heart fluttered with joy and smiles plastered on their faces.
Lena's face was full of smiles as she pushed the door to the room Henderson was in. Trent and Itzel walked in first before Lena and then Cleo.
The look on the faces of those present in the room wasn't bright but Lena was too happy to notice.
"Darling, " Lena smiled wrapping her arms around Henderson.
"Who are you?" Henderson questioned staring at her blankly gently pushing her away.
Lena's eyes crinkled for a second but she chuckled afterwards, she took his words as a joke.
"Babe, I'm so glad you are awake?"
The expression on Henderson's face was still the same, his brows snapped together as he gazed at her.
"Who are you, woman?"
