Chapter 62— I've Moved On!
"Why do I feel that you are disappointed that it's not Henderson?" Matteo questioned with raised eyebrows once they had broken their hug.
"I'm guessing Mrs. Lisa told you about my whereabouts?" Lena mumbled ignoring Matteo's statement like she didn't hear it.
Lena never expected that Mrs Lisa was going to give her out so she didn't see the need to tell her to keep the fact that she saw her in Oxwey away from everyone who knew her. But she couldn't blame the woman for divulging the information, she probably had no idea that Lena wanted it to be kept a secret.
"Yes, she did. It's a good thing I went back to your mom's house, to ask if you had come there again. I bumped into Mrs. Lisa on my way when I was leaving and she told me she saw you in this city and that you work in this restaurant, so I had to come here right away."
"What did my mom say when you asked her?" Lena mumbled looking up at Greg.
"She was worried."
Lena chuckled, "Telling lies now, huh? I know she wasn't and she probably didn't open the door and let you in."
Matteo's eyes widened in shock, Lena said everything correctly like she had seen it unfold. Today he went over to Lena's mom's house for the second time, but this time she didn't open the door or let him in. She just yelled from inside that Lena wasn't there and asked him to leave.
"How did you know?"
A sad smile marred Lena's face," She's my mom. I know what to expect from her."
Matteo patted Lena's back comforting he knew how much it hurt her saying those words even though she was saying them like they meant nothing, it was just her defence to hide her pain.
"Anyway, I and Trent were about to leave. I'll grab my bag quickly so we can go to my house."
Lena's House
Matteo squinted at Lena.
"What?" Lena questioned with raised brows.
"Your house is beautiful."
"Thank you but I know that's not what is on your mind." Lena started staring at him keenly.
"The guy you introduced me to, is he..."
Lena glared at Matteo and he stopped talking.
"He is a co-worker, he helped me get this new job and he is a great friend."
"Great friend?" Matteo peered at Lena with pursed lips and a perfectly arched eyebrow.
"Yes. Is there anything wrong with that?" Lena's face contorted in a frown seeing the expression on Matteo's face.
"No." Matteo shook his head.
He leaned forward taking his back off the backrest of the couch and then a sigh left his lips.
"Lena, why did you leave the way you did? We all have been worried about you, we've been trying to find you. Never did it cross my mind that you would move two cities away just to be away from Henderson."
Lena chuckled bitterly, she drew in a breath and clasped her hands together.
"Trying to find me? I'm not a kid, Also I sent Henderson a message. And can we not talk about Henderson at this moment? I just got back from work and I'm exhausted."
"Henderson misses you, have you seen Itzel? She keeps asking for you every day, she skips her meals and sometimes she doesn't even talk to Henderson because he hasn't brought you back to the Mansion." Lena turned pale with worry, guilt coursed through her veins on hearing about Itzel.
"I'm sorry I left Itzel, I couldn't bear the pain of that revelation and keep staying there. I had to leave."
"And Henderson? You are not worried about him? He has been a shadow of himself, barely focusing on work. He is heartbroken, he didn't..."
Lena raised her hand in the air, it was a gesture asking Matteo to quit the talk about Henderson.
"I'm over Henderson and I don't want to hear the excuses you are giving for me Matteo."
"You still love him, don't lie to me there is no need for that. Moreover, all of that was a scheme, Henderson really didn't know Kyra. All she told you were lies, " Matteo mumbled trying to convince Lena but he just drew a blank stare from her.
Lena nodded when he was done talking, she let out a snicker shaking her head.
"Was that the lies he told you guys? It hurts that you are my best friend but you are taking Henderson's side." A pang of sorrow laced Lena's voice as she said the words.
"Irene called, She has been worried about not being able to reach you on the phone."
"What did you tell her?" Lena drew in a weary breath.
She knew if Irene was to find out that she had left Hayglow without telling her, she was going to be mad.
"Well, I told her that you are perfectly fine. I had to lie that your phone got spoilt and you were going to get a new one."
"Thank you, Matteo." Lena sighed in relief.
"Please you have to promise me that you won't tell Henderson about me being in this city, I don't want to see him. I just want a fresh start with Trent."
"Lena this isn't the right thing to..."
"It might not be the right thing but it's the best thing at this moment, " Lena interrupted.
"Please don't tell anyone that you saw me here, not even Cleo. For the sake of our friendship."
"This is a hard thing to do but I'll do it. But you'll have to give me your contact number so that I'll be able to contact you, " Matteo muttered.
A frown marred his face when he saw the look on Lena's face.
"Don't say you aren't going to give me?"
"I can't give you that Matteo. What if Henderson or Cleo find the number in your phone or you might decide to give it to Henderson yourself because it seems you are on his side." Lena let out giving Matteo a sorry look.
"If that be the case, I better get going, " Matteo mumbled standing to his feet.
"Are you mad at me?"
Matteo chuckled, "Mad at you? I'm not, I'm just perplexed. This isn't the way I've known you to be and it surprises me. You never run away from your problems, you face them but now I don't know what to say to you."
"Why don't you spend the night here and leave tomorrow morning? It's already late evening." Lena suggested deflecting from the matter, she didn't want to keep talking about the whole Henderson thing, and she wasn't ready to change her mind.
"I better not. I have to be at the office tomorrow, what do you expect me to say to my boss? Tell him I came to visit you?"
Two days had passed since Matteo visited Lena in Oxwey, just like he promised Lena he was yet to tell anyone about her whereabouts. He had visited the mansion, and Cleo invited him over they had to work on a project for the company together.
Henderson was seated in the living room where they were but he didn't speak a word to any of them he was lost in his web of thoughts.
"I know where Lena is!" Matteo let out.
Henderson's eyes lit up, Matteo's words were enough to awaken Henderson from his thoughts, and his neck swiftly turned in Matteo's direction. He was bothered by Lena's and Henderson's states they were both hurting. Lena on the other hand was unwilling to admit it. He couldn't just stand back and watch his best friend lose her love, her true love. The man who has managed to bring smiles to Lena's face something that she lost a long time ago, he wasn't going to let her go through that again.
