Chapter 60 He Made Me Do It!
Lena was oblivious to the fact that Greg had feelings for her, that was something she never saw coming. It had been just a week and a few days since they knew each other and he liked her, a lot at that. Lena fell silent, the gears in her mind turning quickly.
Greg sighed when he saw that Lena was yet to say a word to him, she just stared at him blankly no readable expression on her face.
"It's fine if you don't want to give me a response now, you can do that whenever you are ready."
"That's not it Greg, I'm just very surprised. Remember the day you asked me if I wasn't Henderson Bain's girlfriend, well I used to be but we broke up but I'm not ready to go down that road with anyone right now. And again it's been barely a week since we have known each other and I didn't expect that you'll have this kind of feelings for me. I'm sorry but right now, I can't. And I don't have such feelings for you, " Lena muttered lowly staring at Greg's face directly.
She was saddened when she saw a gloomy expression take over his face and the hurt in his eyes but she couldn't tell him a lie just to make him happy when she had no feelings for him that was only going to do more damage if he found out later on. She just got out of a relationship and she wasn't over Henderson neither was she ready to get into another relationship.
"Ok. Well, I'm glad I finally told you how I feel even though you don't feel the same way, " Greg chuckled nervously.
"That aside, you should go home so you can rest. I'll cover for you like I said, and it's not because I want you to consider me as a love interest even though I won't mind if you do. Sorry, I'm just saying you should take the day off or better still go to the hospital so you can get treated, " Greg cracked a faint smile.
Next day.....
Lena was back to work after taking the day off since Greg covered for her, she was thankful to him for his kind gesture because once she had a nap and awoken afterwards the headache was gone and she felt much better. But she couldn't stop thinking about Greg's words, she wondered how awkward it was going to get between them after he confessed his feelings and she rejected him. She made up her mind that it was going to be best if she kept her distance from Greg, she didn't want to give him any false hope or make Ria who was in love with Greg hate her even more.
When Lena got to the restaurant, all she did was exchange pleasantries with Greg and walk away. He noticed her mood but decided not to bother her about it, he didn't want to seem like he was forcing her into anything or making the workspace uncomfortable for her that was the last thing he wanted.
"If it isn't the baby mama, trying to trap a young man to be her puppet!" Ria mocked in a taunting tone as Lena walked into the kitchen.
"Why would you say that kind of thing about her?" Mike who was standing beside Ria cautioned.
Ria glared at him and scoffed, "I didn't call names, did I?"
"Hi Mike?" Lena said with a smile ignoring Ria's comments.
"Hi, Lena. You look really beautiful today, yellow suits you very well." Mike complimented.
Lena was wearing a flared yellow dress.
"Thank you, " Lena smiled.
Ria burst into laughter.
"You think her dress is beautiful? You know what I think? I think you need to get your eyes checked. I'm pretty sure she got that dress from a thrift store and for less than a dollar." Ria sneered her nose crinkled in disgust.
"Well thank you, even though that's not the best of compliments I've received. " Lena mumbled turning to Ria.
Ria's eyes swept disdainfully over Lena, she was pissed that wasn't the reaction she wanted to get from Lena, her goal was to drive Lena mad until she got the response she wanted, which was a fight.
"I'm pretty sure Henderson Bain realised how much of a whore you are no wonder he dumped your slutty ass! Stay away from Greg!" Ria snarled pointing a finger at Lena. As if that wasn't enough Ria raised her hand and slapped Lena hard across the cheek.
Lena nibbled on her lower lip, and after one more fleeting gaze from Lena to Ria, her palm crashed against Ria's cheeks, the effect strong enough to make Ria stagger.
Ria's jaw dropped, her palm was on the cheek which had now turned red and painful. She blinked generally trying to steady her vision which had started to become blurry as a result of the slap.
Lena smiled satisfied, " That's how it is done."
Fury coursed through Ria who was still in disbelief of what just happened. She didn't expect Lena to retaliate. Ria had lost her words probably an effect of the resounding slap.
"Are you surprised that I slapped you back? I've had enough of your nonsense, Ria!" Lena seethed.
Ria's face contorted in anger, " How dare you slap me!" She launched at Lena ready for a fight, her eyes flaring with rage but Mike pulled her back, restraining her.
"I will kill you, Lena. I swear!" Ria screamed trying to wriggle herself out of Mike's grip but she failed.
"Ria, what going on here?" Greg asked as he ran into the kitchen.
"Lena, are you okay?" Greg inquired rushing to her side.
"I'm fine, " Lena replied looking away from him.
Greg averted his gaze from Lena and shifted his eyes to Ria who was glaring at him.
"What did you do this time?" Greg frowned.
"Fuck you, Greg. You walk in here and put the blame on me without even caring to know what happened first. Your beloved Lena slapped me." Ria let out angrily.
"That was because you slapped her first. You started it, Ria, first, you hurled insults at and as if that wasn't enough you slapped her. What other reaction were you expecting, a smile or a thank you?" Mike interjected.
"Let go of me, " Ria yelled when she realised that Mike wasn't going to take her side.
Mike let go of Ria and stepped away from her.
"What is wrong with you Ria? Do you know how much commotion you have caused? A kitchen is not a fighting place, you should be grateful that Mrs Clinton is out else I'm sure by now you would have been on your way in search of a new job."
"You are stupid. I knew you were going to take Lena's side as always but I don't fucking care. All of you can go to hell for all I care!" She huffed before moving her gaze to Lena.
"This isn't over, I'll make you pay for this." Ria threatened menacingly.
"Enough of this!" Greg cautioned.
"Lena I'm really sorry about this, " Greg muttered taking steps to her.
"I'm not interested in this apology of yours, whatever you two have between yourselves, sort it out. I'm done getting caught up in between! You both just stay away from me" Lena started raising her hand in the air before she stormed out of the kitchen.
Lena was fed up with being considerate and putting up with Ria's crazy attitude, all Ria had done since Lena started to work in the restaurant was make life miserable for her, try to sabotage her and provoke her at every opportunity. Now, the end had come she was done having or bearing Ria's excesses.
Once workday drew to a close, Lena headed home with Trent. She made her and Trent dinner after they had freshened up. After dinner, she put Trent to sleep.
Since the day had proven arduous for her, leaving her utterly drained, she surrendered herself to a deep slumber in the embrace of her bed once she laid on it.
A few days Later....
The slap seemed to have perfectly conveyed the message to Ria because ever since the day she slapped Lena and Lena retaliated she treaded with caution whenever she was around Lena.
In the past, it was Lena who avoided Ria at all costs but now the tables had turned Ria didn't interfere in any of Lena's activities and she no longer threw shades at Lena or anything of that sort.
Lena on the other hand avoided Greg as much as she could, she made it clear to him that she couldn't afford to with the whole drama with him and Ria, She advised him to check on Ria since they were friends and he could probably figure out if she was mentally okay or not.
"Good afternoon, ma'am." Lena greeted placing the packaged food on the table of the woman who was seated. The woman's head was lowered. One of the waiters had taken the order so Lena had to serve it.
"Lena, " surprise crossed the woman's face as she raised her head after hearing Lena's voice.
Lena's eyes lit up and she smiled.
"Mrs Lisa, " she sputtered hugging the woman who was now on her feet.
Mrs Lisa was her neighbour when she lived at her mom's place. The woman was nothing but kind to Lena and Trent, she treated Lena more as a daughter than her own mom did. Mrs Lisa had helped her a lot of times in the past.
"How have you been Lena? How is Trent?" The woman asked after they disengaged the hug.
"I've been good. Trent is fine, he came with me. Do you want to see him?"
"Of course, I've missed that cutie, " Mrs Lisa beamed warmly.
Lena excused herself, Shortly she returned with Trent who ran to hug Mrs. Lisa immediately when he saw her.
"How are you, Trent?" Mrs Lisa asked.
"I'm fine, thank you, ma'am," Trent responded with a smile.
"It's been a long while. I'm a bit surprised to see you here though. I had no idea you moved to Oxwey. I came to visit my mom, so I thought to get us some Mac and cheese, I heard this restaurant makes the best around here so."
"Oh, thank you for coming." Lena appreciated.
"I'm glad I came, I got to see you and Trent after such a long time."
"How's my mom?" Lena asked.
Mrs. Lisa paused for a second peering at Kena with a warm smile, Lena was the sweetest daughter anyone could ask for yet her mother treated her like an outcast and regardless of that Lena still loved her mom.
"Your mom is fine."
Mrs Lisa left after having a chat with Lena, Lena got permission from her boss first she didn't want to break any of the rules. Turned out Mrs Lisa and Mrs Clinton knew each other so it was a delight. Lena told Mrs Lisa that she didn't have to pay for the food, the bills were on her that was a small gift from her. Lena was grateful that Mrs. Lisa wasn't a poke nose, she didn't bug Lena with questions about why she left Hayglow to Oxwey. Mrs Lisa left after that not without gifting Trent three hundred dollars even though Lena tried to make her take it back she didn't.
HAYGLOW CITY
Henderson's mansion...
Henderson had just received a call from the private investigator that Kyra the lady he was in search of had been found, the private investigator sent him a message which contained an address of where they were to meet.
Kyra's eyes bulged out the moment she saw Henderson walk into the apartment. Her heart was beating hard in her chest, she knew that if Henderson was here it meant she was in trouble.
"Welcome, Mr Henderson." The private investigator greeted standing up to his feet as Henderson stood beside him.
"Francis."
Henderson cast a quick glance at the private investigator before his gaze settled on Kyra who gazed downward and avoided eye contact with Henderson. Henderson's eyes burned with rage a preamble to what was going on within him, anger surged through his veins, rigid cords forming in his neck as he peered at Kyra.
Kyra ran to the door in an attempt to escape but after Francis pressed a button on the remote which was in his hand the door closed.
"You fooled me, Philip...Francis or whatever your name is," Kyra yelled turning to face them.
She bumped into Francis at the mall about two weeks ago somehow they became friends, started hanging out and then he asked her to be his girlfriend, he had invited her over to his house earlier today saying he had a surprise for her. Unbeknownst to her the said surprise was going to be Henderson Bain.
"I was only doing my job, Kyra, " Francis stated indifferently.
"I'm only going to ask you once, Who put you up to this?" Henderson's fierce tone echoed in the room his icy glare not leaving Kyra even for a second.
Kyra gulped down the lump that seemed to have formed in her throat, with trembling lips she slowly tilted her head up to meet Henderson's gaze.
"I'm sorry, I didn't want to do any of this but I had to. Brian Gomez made me do it, he didn't give me a choice."
'Brian Gomez, there was only one Man with that name that Henderson knew of, that man was his best friend. This couldn't be!'
