Chapter 25: In Trouble
On hearing that statement, Sarah immediately choked on the food she was eating, and without hesitating, she took the water on the table and gulped it down in order to calm herself down.
The last time someone told her that he wanted her was six years ago, and the person who told her that was Xavier. In the case of Xavier, she loved it when he said that to her because it made her feel wanted and desired, but hearing it from Charles only got her enraged. To her, it was as if he was asking to do to her what Xavier had done to her some years ago.
"Are you okay?" Charles asked her with a concerned tone.
"Yes, I'm okay," Sarah said to her before keeping the glass of water on the table.
"I'm so sorry; I never knew that my expressions would have such an effect on you," Charles said to Sarah, who was already cleaning her mouth, leaving the remaining food behind.
"No problem, Mr. Charles; actually, I'm not a property that you can own, so you can't tell me that you want me," Sarah said to him.
"Actually, that wasn't what I was referring to; I never said that I wanted to own you; I was literally asking you to give me a chance to own your heart, not you as a whole," Charles said to Sarah, and immediately she smiled at him before shaking her head in disbelief.
"I'm sorry to disappoint you, Mr. Charles, but that's never going to happen. If I knew that this was the reason why you asked me to dine with you, I wouldn't have come in the first place, but unfortunately, I'm already here, and I have heard what you have to say, and I have also given you my honest reply," Sarah said to him frankly.
"But tell me, am I the only one to whom you are never going to give your heart, or is it all men in general?" Charles asked Sarah with an inquisitive look.
"To be frank with you, I think it's all men in general. The last time I made the mistake of giving my heart to a man, he deliberately shattered it, and as we both know, when a glass is shattered,it can never be repaired," Sarah said to him.
"You are right about that, but do you think that it would be fair to qualify all men as heart-shatters just because you were a victim of one man who shattered your heart?" Xavier asked Sarah.
"It might not be fair to you, but it's fair to me; after all, it's my heart that was shattered, not yours," Sarah said to Charles, and immediately he sighed in defeat.
"Ok, tell me, what do you want me to do so that you can give me a chance to prove to you that I'm not like your ex-husband?" Charles asked Sarah, who took a glance at her wristwatch before standing up.
"Thank you for the dinner; I really enjoyed it. I have fulfilled my own part of the agreement; I hope you will be a man of your own word and fulfill your own part," Sarah said to him before slightly pushing the glass of water down, and immediately it shattered on the floor.
"Oops," Sarah muttered while acting as if she had done it mistakenly.
"If you are able to put all the broken pieces of this glass back together, maybe I will give you a chance," Sarah said to Charles before walking to the exit.
"Unbelievable," Charles muttered to himself once she left before asking the waitress who was cleaning up the broken glasses to go and get her the bills.
As Sarah was driving back home, she couldn't help but smile at herself. Even though she had a long day at work, the look on Charles' face when she rejected him was enough to boost her energy once again.
This wasn't the first time someone had tried asking her out since when she left Xavier, and she always found one way or the other to get them off her way without adding much effort, just as she did with Charles. What made the Charles case more interesting is that she didn't only get him off her way but also succeeded in getting him to become her business partner. Now he won't have any other choice than to start doing business with Ethic Textiles. After all, they had an agreement, and she respected her own part of the agreement. It's up to him to respect his own part of the agreement.
Thinking about all this, Sarah smiled at herself once again before taking a glance at her wristwatch and realizing that it was almost nine p.m. Happily, she had informed her uncle about the dinner after leaving the company in order for him not to get worried about her in case she came back late. Now that she had finally succeeded in getting Charles to do business with their company, she couldn't wait to get back home and inform her uncle about it. Surely the old man was going to ground her for rejecting Charles, but at least he would be happy that she succeeded in getting him to work with their company.
Sighing heavily, she switched off the air conditioner in the car and whined the windows down, allowing the fresh night air to blow against her face.
As she was still driving through the lonely road, she noticed that there were two cars parked beside the road, some meters away from her. According to her, the cars probably had some issues, but what was strange was the fact that the two cars had issues at the same spot.
As she was getting nearer, the two cars suddenly ignited and blocked the road, and immediately two masked men came down from each car, each one of them holding a rifle.
Once Sarah saw them, her heart skipped immediately. Without thinking twice, she stepped on the brakes on the car. With her heart pounding heavily, she tried to reverse, but it was already too late; the men were already raining bullets on the car while approaching her.
