Chapter 58: Chasing Someone Who Isn't Chasing You
It was two p.m. in the afternoon, and the afternoon sun had already engulfed the whole New York city with its brightness. Meanwhile, Xavier was inside his office, going through some important files.
After signing all the necessary documents he had to sign with Sarah in order to pass the proprietorship of the company to her, he had asked Sarah to give him two weeks to clear his things out of the company and also settle things with his employees and shareholders.
As he was still going through the documents, a call popped into his phone that was on his table. Without hesitating, he took the phone and checked the caller ID, which was Ben, and with that, he picked it up and activated the loudspeaker before placing it on the table.
"Hey Ben, how are you?" Xavier asked him.
"I'm good, sir. I hope you have seen the news." Ben asked him.
"No, I haven't; I'm actually busy," Xavier said to him.
"Please, sir, you need to take a look at the news right away," Ben said to him.
"What's the issue? I hope everything is okay." Xavier asked him before taking the remote and switching on the television.
"Shit," he muttered to himself when he noticed the news being displayed on the television.
The fact that he had sold his company wasn't the main issue; the main issue was that he was going to become Sarah's personal assistant.
In the subtitle of the news, it was written:
"FROM THE CEO OF QUIM CORPORATION TO THE PERSONAL ASSISTANT OF THE CEO OF ETHIC TEXTILES.
As he was listening to the news, he could hear the journalist asking if everything that has been happening to him recently are punishments for his past sins or whether it's due to his carelessness. At the same time, they also made mention of his wife, who had left him recently due to his recent misfortunes.
As Xavier was watching the various comments given by the journalists, his phone suddenly started ringing, jolting him back to reality.
Sighing heavily, he took the phone and checked the caller ID, which was that of one of his clients. Without hesitating, he hanged up the call and dropped the phone on the table, but after some minutes, another call was followed by another client, which he also hanged up, and after some minutes, another call still followed.
Sighing in frustration, he took the phone and switched it off before switching off the television as well. With that, he stood up and walked to the window and looked down, only to see the uncountable number of reporters who were in front of his office trying to get in, but fortunately the security wasn't giving them the opportunity to come in.
Sighing heavily, he took his second phone and placed a call to the person who he knew was behind everything that was going on, which was Sarah. After some minutes of ringing, she finally picked up.
"Hey wifey, the message you sent to me was successfully delivered," Xavier said to her through the phone.
"Message? I don't remember sending you any message, Mr. Xavier," Sarah said to him from the other end.
"Let's stop with the pretense. When you told me that you were going to do everything in your power to ruin me, I thought you were joking. I never knew you took it seriously, even after I tried talking things out with you," Xavier said to Sarah.
"Well, that was also the same way I felt the day I woke up and saw divorce papers laying beside me on the bed. I thought it was some kind of joke until you started forcing me to sign the divorce papers," Sarah said to him.
"It's been six years since that event took place, and I have done the only thing I can do, which is to apologize. We are all human beings, and we all make mistakes, and I'm sure that you also make mistakes sometimes, but from the perspective of things, it's clear that you didn't even give a damn about my apology; the only thing you are concerned about is ruining me, right?" Xavier asked her.
"Well, you are right about that, but the truth is that I haven't done anything to you yet. If it's about what you saw in the news, I only told them the truth, which is that you sold your company to me and I also employed you as my personal assistant, so I don't see anything wrong with that, and I don't see anything wrong with that. I'm not also a spirit to know that the journalists were going to draw wrong conclusions from what I told them," Sarah said to him.
"Acting innocent, huh?" Xavier asked her before pausing for a few minutes.
"You know, Sarah, if someone had told me six years ago that the calm Sarah who I knew back then was going to become this fierce today, I would have never believed it, but today no one needs to tell me before I believe it because it's all happening before me," Xavier said to Sarah.
"Well, you made me what I am today; if I'm this fierce today, it's all thanks to you, and as the kind person that I am, I have to make you taste the food you cooked," Sarah said to Xavier, who sighed heavily.
"Actually, I haven't yet gotten the full taste; if you want me to get the full taste of the food that I cooked, then you will need to do more than what you are doing. I will hang up now, but before hanging up, I would like to give you a little advice. You are chasing someone who isn't chasing you, and you are also waging war against someone who isn't ready to fight a battle against you. I will advise you to be very careful, because you might end up hurting yourself," Xavier said to Sarah before hanging up.
Once he hung up, he sighed heavily before placing a call across to Ben, who picked up after some seconds.
"Hello, Ben, where are you?" Xavier asked him.
"I'm on my way to the company," Ben said to him.
"Okay, hurry up and come and get me out of here," Xavier said to him before hanging up.
