Chapter 30: Fishy Event
Xavier was inside his office, going through some files on his computer, when he suddenly heard a knock on the door of his office.
"Come in," he ordered, his gaze fixed intently on the screen of his laptop. With that, the door burst open, and Ben walked in.
"Good morning, sir," Ben greeted him from where he was standing.
"Yes, good morning, Ben. How are you?" Xavier asked him.
"I'm good, sir. What about you?" Ben asked Xavier, whose gaze was still fixed on the computer.
"I'm good too; please have a seat," Xavier said to him while tapping continuously on the keyboard of his computer.
After some minutes, Xavier sighed heavily before raising his head and looking at Ben, who was sitting silently in front of him.
"How was the delivery yesterday?" Xavier asked him.
"It was fine; as usual, there weren't any complications," Ben said to him.
"I'm happy to hear that; actually, the reason I called you was to inquire about the mission I had assigned to you," Xavier said to him.
"Which of the missions?" Ben asked him with a casual tone.
"That of Sarah; remember I had asked you to keep an eye on her?" Xavier said to Ben, and he nodded.
"Recently, I have been having this strange feeling that she's the one trying to bring me down at all costs. I hate the fact that someone has been striking me continuously, and I can't even do anything about it because I don't know who it is," Xavier said to Ben.
"Well, I have been keeping an eye on her for a while now, but I haven't noticed anything strange about her; something even happened yesterday," Ben said to Xavier, and immediately he furrowed his brows at her.
"Something like what?" Xavier asked him with an inquisitive look.
"Actually, yesterday, Mr. Charles took her out.
"That bastard," Xavier muttered under his breath, remembering how Charles had incited other clients to request a refund after his ship had sunk.
If not for him, probably some of his clients could have had a little patience until the next goods he had ordered would arrive, and he would deliver it to them, but when they noticed that the client who had ordered the most expensive goods had requested a refund, they too started requesting a refund too, and when Xavier tried to convince them to have a little patience, Charles, like a devil's advocate, encouraged them to threaten to sue him and didn't refund them.
Seeing that the majority were requesting a refund, Xavier had no choice but to refund them, despite knowing that this was going to have a huge negative impact on his company.
"Sir, are you listening to me?" Ben asked Xavier before tapping him on the shoulder, jolting him back to reality.
"Ooh, sorry, my mind drifted to something else, so what were you saying?" Xavier asked him before scrubbing his hand on his face.
"I was explaining to you what happened to Sarah last night," Ben said to him.
"Yes, I'm listening," Xavier said to him.
"Well, last night, when she was going back home after dinner, some armed men attacked her.
"What?" Xavier chipped in immediately.
"I hope nothing bad happened to her." Xavier asked Ben with a worried tone, and he shook his head negatively.
"Nothing happened to her; Charles rescued her even though he arrived a little bit late," Ben said to Xavier.
"That bastard," Xavier muttered inwardly once again.
"How come you didn't help her out? I thought I asked you to keep an eye on her." Xavier asked him with furrowed brows.
"I was occupied when the event took place; it was at the same time I had gone to deliver the goods to the client," Ben said to him.
"Then how did you manage to know exactly what had happened if you weren't around when the event took place?" Xavier asked him.
"I had assigned some of our men to keep an eye on her; they couldn't have interfered because I had ordered them not to allow her to see their faces. According to them, they had wanted to intercede when they noticed that things were getting out of control, but happily Charles arrived at the same time," Ben said to him.
"That's a relief, even though I hate the fact that it was that bastard that saved her," Xavier said to Ben, but he remained silent while wondering why Xavier was jealous after hearing that Sarah had been rescued by Charles.
"By the way, were you guys able to find out who sent those men to kill her?" Xavier asked Ben, and he shook his head negatively.
"Our men didn't find out who tried to kill her; once Charles and Sarah left, some cops immediately came and took the dead bodies away," Ben said to him.
"That's really strange; it wasn't even announced on the news this morning. The person who sent those men probably had connections with the police. I want you to find out who those men were and the police officers that took the dead bodies away. There's something fishy about this whole issue," Xavier said to Ben, and he nodded in reply.
"By the way, do you think that Sarah and Charles are dating?" Xavier asked Ben, and immediately he furrowed his brows at him.
"Actually, I can't say for now, and I haven't seen them doing anything that shows that they are dating. By the way, sir, do you still love Mrs. Sarah?" Ben asked him politely, and immediately Xavier scoffed at him.
"No, of course; I'm already married. Why do you ask?" Xavier asked him.
"Actually, sir, it's written all over your face," Ben said to Xavier, who scoffed again.
"I'm just worried about her, nothing else; we both know who Charles is and what he's capable of; I don't want him to hurt her," Xavier said to Ben, and he nodded in reply, even though he didn't believe what his boss was saying.
"What about the company? What are you planning to do about it, especially now that almost all the shareholders have already withdrawn their shares?" Ben asked him.
"I'm going to sell it; I can't keep on investing in it, and believe me, I already know who's going to buy it," Xavier said to him with a smirk.
