Chapter 77: Background Check
"What took you so long?" Charles asked Sarah as they were walking to the garage.
"Nothing; I was busy getting myself ready," Sarah said to him before entering the car.
"Only that? You took more than two hours; I hope you are aware of that?" Charles asked her before igniting the car and driving out of the mansion.
"Come on babe, I'm a woman for crying out loud. You can't expect me to get ready in less than thirty minutes just like you guys do, and mind you, I was preparing to go out with my fiancee, so I had to take my time in order to look beautiful for you," Sarah said to Charles while expecting him to smile at least, but he maintained a straight face while concentrating on the steering.
"Hey Charles, is everything okay?" Sarah asked him, and he hummed in reply.
"Really? Then what's with the long face?" Sarah asked him.
"Nothing," he said to her without sparing her a glance.
"Are you angry at me because I wasn't ready earlier?" Sarah asked him.
"No, Sarah, and can you please stop bombarding me with questions? I said everything was okay," Charles said to her while driving the car.
"You are saying everything is fine, but your face is saying the contrary. If this is the face you are going to keep today, then I think you should take me back home. I don't see how we are going to get to know each other well with this facial expression of yours," Sarah said to Charles, and immediately he sighed heavily before looking at Sarah.
"Look, Sarah, I'm not angry at you; you are a woman, and I can't expect you to get ready in less than thirty minutes, just as you said," Charles said to her.
"Then what's wrong?" Sarah asked Charles, and immediately he sighed heavily.
"It's your dad," Charles said to Sarah, and immediately she furrowed her brows at him.
"What? How is my dad the issue?" Sarah asked him with furrowed brows.
"He said something to me earlier, and I didn't like it," Charles said to her.
"Things like what?" Sarah asked him.
"Actually, when I arrived, he asked me about our marriage, which is next month, and afterwards, he started warning me not to hurt your feelings; if not, he was going to show me the other side of him," Charles said to Sarah, and immediately she burst into a round of laughter.
Come on, Sarah, stop laughing; it's not funny. Tell me, since we started dating, have I ever done something to hurt you?" Charles asked her.
"No, of course," Sarah said to him while smiling.
"Then what's with the threats and warnings?" Charles asked her with an unpleased tone.
"Come on, Charles, I don't even see any reason for you to get angry; my dad was actually doing what every father would do; he doesn't want me to get hurt, that's it," Sarah said to Charles.
"Well, it's easy for you to say because you weren't around when he was saying it; it was as if I did something wrong to him, and believe me, that's the first time he has ever talked to me like that," Charles said to Sarah.
"Well, I think I know why he reacted like that towards you," Sarah said to Charles, and immediately he furrowed his brows at her.
"Really? Then tell me; I'm very curious to know," Charles said to Sarah.
"Well, since you weren't ready to tell me why you were angry, I'm not also telling you," Sarah said to him.
"Come on, Sarah, I'm sorry about that; I just didn't want to bother you," Charles said to her.
"Then you should have maintained a smiling facial expression," Sarah said to him.
"Yeah, you are right, but the issue here is that I can't do that; I'm transparent like water, so I don't know how to hide my emotions," Charles said to her.
"Whatever; the main reason why he reacted like that towards you is because he met Xavier yesterday when he went to bring Justin back from school, and Xavier told him that you aren't who you say you are; in other words, you are faking your identity," Sarah said to him.
'That bastard,' Charles muttered inwardly.
"What!! And he believed that?" Sarah asked Charles.
"Well, he didn't; he was just curious, and he wanted to find out if Xavier was telling the truth or not," Sarah said to Charles.
"I can't believe he allowed that scumbag to feed him lies about me, but you could have informed me about it; what if I hadn't withheld myself and I replied unrespectfully to your dad?" Charles asked Sarah.
"To be sincere, I didn't know he was going to react like that; if not, I would have surely informed you about it," Sarah said to Charles, and he sighed heavily.
"I hope you have seen the reason why I want to get married as soon as possible; it's to avoid issues like this one," Charles said to Sarah.
"Well, you don't need to worry. I know that Charles is going to do everything in his power to prevent us from getting married, but I'm not going to give him the chance to do that," Sarah said to Charles, and immediately he smiled at her before holding her hand with his second hand that wasn't on the steering wheel.
"I'm so happy to hear that, but tell me, when your uncle informed you about what Xavier said about me, did you have the feeling that I was faking my identity?" Charles asked Sarah, and immediately she shook her head negatively.
"Why?" Charles asked Sarah, but she only smiled without replying.
"Let me guess; you have done a thorough background check on me, and you are already aware that I'm not hiding my identity," Charles said to Sarah, and immediately she widened her eyes in surprise.
"How did you know?" She asked Charles with a surprised tone.
To be continued.
